RHD Is
- In 1984, a new rabbit disease emerged in China. The disease RHD, Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease, caused death in the European Rabbit, the same species of all domesticated rabbits in the world, by creating a hemorrhage of at least one major organ.
- Within 4 years it crossed 3 continents killing 90% of all rabbits in its' path within 24 to 48 hours of contact
- The U.S. has had three officially reported outbreaks.
- There are no protections against RHD entering the U.S. nor vaccines available to U.S. rabbit caretakers.
The Coalition Is
- The Coalition is comprised of show breeders, rabbit fosterers, House Rabbit Society members, animal welfare activists, animal rights activists, rabbit meat producers, laboratory animal producers, companion animal caretakers, veterinarians.
- The RHD in the U.S. Coalition is working to create safeguards and educate rabbit caretakers as well as the general public to stop this disease.
